Travel into the mountains to the Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple in Ramboda, built by the Chinmaya Mission on the hills where Hanuman is believed to have begun his search for Sita. Continue to the cool highlands of Nuwara Eliya, exploring the manicured tea estates and the colonial charm of Gregory Lake.
Visit the Seetha Amman Temple in Sita Eliya, believed to be the site of Ashoka Vatika where Sita was held captive. Look for the massive footprints on the rock bed, said to be those of Lord Hanuman. Explore Hakgala Botanical Garden and visit Divurumpola, the “Place of Oath,” where Sita is said to have undergone the Agni Pariksha (fire ordeal) to prove her purity.
Descend to Ella to witness the crashing Ravana Falls and the nearby Ravana Caves, where the king is said to have hidden Sita. Continue to Kataragama, a multi-religious pilgrimage site. This sacred ground is deeply associated with the legend of Lord Kartikeya, who is believed to have assisted Lord Rama in his battle against Ravana. Furthermore, explore wildlife at Yala National Park, you will get the chance to see elephants, deer, bears and leopards too.
Visit Ussangoda, a striking red landscape on the southern coast. According to legend, this was one of King Ravana’s airports, and its scorched appearance is said to be the result of Lord Hanuman setting the area ablaze with his flaming tail. Later, transfer to the capital city of Colombo for a short orientation tour and shopping.
Explore the Panchamuga Anjaneyar Temple, the only temple in Sri Lanka dedicated to the five-faced Hanuman. Later, visit the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, the site where Vibeeshana (Ravana’s brother) was crowned King of Lanka by Lakshmana after the war.
